A crisis intervention is an immediate and short-term emergency response to mental, emotional, physical, and behavioral distress. Crisis intervention helps to restore an individual’s wholistic balance to their Biological, psychological and social functioning. This may reduce the potential for long-term trauma or distress. It is a method used to offer immediate, short term help to individuals who experience events that produce emotional, mental, physical and behavioural distress or problems.
Crisis counseling is not intended to provide psychotherapy or similar treatment, but offers a short-term intervention to help clients receive assistance, resources, stabilization, and support.
