The overall goals of Indigenous Suicide Prevention are:
Suicide is an issue that many people find difficult to understand and uncomfortable to talk about. Unfortunately, this leaves people with insufficient or incorrect information about the issue. Education and public awareness can help reduce myths and the stigma often attached to suicide behaviour. This awareness presentation gives participants a chance to ask questions in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Suicide has been evident in many communities across Canada. This workshop will provide an Indigenous suicide preventive model in the communities that will enhance first response teams in dealing with suicide. Some of the topics that will be addressed are:
Definition of suicide
Who is at risk?
Magnitude of the problem in Canada
Why do people commit suicide?
What are the danger signs?
How to recognize the warning signs of suicide behaviour
Steps to help to prevent a suicide attempt
What to do following a suicide attempt
What can you do if you are feeling suicidal?
Dealing with thinking patterns leading to suicide
How you can help?

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TRAINED BY PEOPLE THAT HAVE LITTLE OR NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE PAIN AND SUFFERINGS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT.
DRUGS, VIOLENCE, ABUSE, INCEST, GANGS, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, BEING EXPLOITED, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ABUSE, LATERAL VIOLENCE AND BULLYING: THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE FOUNDATIONAL REASONS THAT AN INDIVIDUAL CHOOSES SUICIDE.
Suicide is a leading cause of death for youth in Canada. For Indigenous communities, high rates of suicide are linked to a variety of factors including the consequences of colonialism, discrimination, community disruption and the loss of culture and language. Addressing the disparities in the social determinants of health and promoting a sense of hope, purpose, meaning and belonging are key ways of promoting life and preventing suicide for Indigenous peoples.
Indigenous Wholistic Healing Services Andrew Bear; is a highly sought after presenter in First Nations circles. His presentations on issues such as Indigenous Suicide Prevention & Family Violence have helped individuals all across Canada establish a balance in their lives.
